in preparation for the eventual end of XP and me not wanting to build a whole new machine for whatever benefits vista is supposed to have when it ships on the 12th of never, i’ve installed kubuntu on my laptop. it’s a good way to play around and learn how to use the OS, and if there’s something i can’t do that i have to do right at that moment, i can always boot into XP. i’ve been using it for a couple of weeks now, off and on, and i feel pretty comfortable in it. installing apps hasn’t been a problem, even when i have to compile from source.

i’m eagerly awaiting the dapper drake release though, for a few significant reasons: 1) new linux kernel that has complete built in support for my wifi card, so i won’t keep dropping connections and so the LED indicator lights will work (it’s the little things…), and 2) WPA support so i can use my secured home network rather than the wide open one i have for guests. not being able to access samba shares on my windows desktop is really hamstringing me in certain things, such as getting firefox configured to my liking. i would much rather import my existing profile/extensions/themes rather than try to recreate it. anyway, dapper drake is only a couple of months away so it’s not a big deal.

i need to figure out how to get Canon’s Digital Photo Professional and EOS Viewer running under WINE, if that’s possible. i know picasa runs under WINE so that won’t be a problem. and of course GIMP and Inkscape are already running, so that rounds out the graphics apps i depend on. i’m using open source on windows already for practically everything else, so the transition should be smooth.

by the time XP is truly dead, linux development will have advanced so far as to make vista completely unnecessary for me, for both laptop and desktop.

revert updates , why would one think of reverting updates , think if the new update doesn’t work , ok this is what happened last night , after i updated my display driver , guess what happened after reboot , my display on aspire one netbook supported only 800×600 , earlier it supported 1024×600 , so i had to revert update , you can use same thing for other updates , ok lets get started , we first need to disable the update from software sources , for eg in here , i will disable xserver update from 3rd party , now we will remove the update form synaptic package manager , than click mark for removal and than click apply , than reboot , after that install old package of that app , for that go to /var/cache/apt/archives dir , this stores your downloaded pacakge , the old and new version , just check the version number , did you notice the ver , 3a.2.7.1 and 3a.2.9.0 , so you get it right the old ver will be 2.7.1 and newer will be 2.9.0 , install the old ver , than reboot , thats all.
